Security solutions for energy & utility networks

Generation sites, substations and distribution networks run on SCADA masters, RTUs and PLCs talking DNP3, IEC 61850 and Modbus — equipment built for a 15–20 year service life, not for today’s threat landscape. Every telemetry feed, historian sync or remote-monitoring link that leaves that environment is a potential way back in, which is exactly what the NIS Regulations (UK/EU) and NERC CIP (North America) now require operators to account for.

ConnexONE sits at that boundary as a hardware data diode: operational data — grid performance metrics, meter readings, power quality telemetry — flows out to a control room, historian or cloud dashboard, and nothing, including a fully compromised receiving system, can send anything back. It replaces a firewall rule that can be misconfigured with a physical, auditable one-way path.

For substations and unmanned sites, ConnexONE NOVA’s compact, DIN-rail form factor fits directly into existing distribution boards without a dedicated cabinet. For control centres consolidating feeds from multiple sites, ZENITH handles the higher-throughput side of the same one-way architecture. Both speak the protocols this sector already runs, so there is no rip-and-replace of RTU or SCADA infrastructure.

The same boundary that protects operational integrity also produces the audit trail regulators ask for: a documented, hardware-enforced segmentation point between OT and everything downstream, rather than a firewall configuration that has to be re-justified at every audit cycle.

At the substation itself, ConnexONE’s one-way boundary often sits behind an EdgeGate router handling local segmentation, VLANs and remote access — so the same site gets a hardware-enforced telemetry export and a properly firewalled RTU network from one vendor.

Which ConnexONE product fits energy and utility deployments?

The right fit depends on what the site needs to do — export data one-way, route and firewall a network, filter commands, monitor passively, or power edge devices. Here is how each product applies.

ConnexONE Data Diode

Direct fit. NOVA’s DIN-rail chassis suits unmanned substations; ZENITH takes the higher-throughput side for control centres consolidating feeds from several sites. Both carry DNP3, IEC 61850 and Modbus out with a hardware-enforced one-way boundary.

EdgeGate

Feasible where the substation also needs routing and a proper firewall, not just an export path — see above. One appliance handles both jobs where ConnexONE alone would only cover the outbound telemetry.

ConnexGate

Feasible for sites that need command-level filtering rather than a hard one-way boundary — allowing SCADA read commands while blocking write/reset commands from crossing into the substation network.

ConnexSight

Feasible as a passive tap feeding a SOC or IDS from the control-room link, without touching production traffic or requiring active scanning of RTUs.

VERGE

Feasible for powering and connecting cameras, environmental sensors and access points at unmanned sites over the same cable that carries their data.
